5 Immunity Boosting Foods For Toddlers

When our children are toddlers, it’s normal for them to get several stomach upsets, infections, and colds throughout the year. Kid’s immune systems are still immature, and their bodies are not yet used to fighting off viruses. To boost your toddler’s immune system, the best thing you can do is to give them plenty of immunity boosting foods.  So, why not start with these five tasty immunity boosting snacks.

immunity boosting foods

#1: Yogurt

Some yogurts contain probiotics or live bacteria, which help to improve digestive health and boost the immune system. When you are choosing yogurt for your toddler, check the label to ensure that the yogurt contains ‘live active cultures.’ Do not choose ‘pasteurized’ yogurts, as these will not contain the same healthy bacteria. There are several other health benefits of yogurt, for example, improving bone strength and bone mass. Some studies have indicated that yogurt also improves the health of your heart.

You can compensate for zinc deficiency with the help of dietary supplements, which include this trace element. Additionally, products from reputable probiotic manufacturers can support gut health, enhancing overall nutrient absorption.

#2: Berries

Berries are packed with antioxidants, and these will help your child’s body to prevent oxidative stress and fight off free radicals.

According to a study on Health Line, ‘blueberries, blackberries, and raspberries have the highest antioxidant activity of commonly consumed fruits.’

Our kids need plenty of antioxidants to keep their immune systems nice and strong. Berries provide lots of nutrients, including vitamin C, vitamin K, and manganese. Our kids need vitamin C to keep their natural defenses strong, while vitamin K is important for heart health and bone health.

#3: Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits are well known for boosting immunity.  They are packed with vitamin C, B vitamins, copper, and magnesium. Citrus fruits are also high in fiber, so consuming these can help toddlers who suffer from constipation. Other useful high fiber foods include whole grains such as brown rice, oatmeal, or brown bread. If a high fiber diet does not help, you can try purchasing a stool softener for kids.

#4: Broccoli Bites

Broccoli is also considered as an immunity boosting foods.  It is high in antioxidants, and it’s packed with plenty of nutrients and minerals to keep your toddler healthy. Kids are notorious for being fussy eaters and unsurprisingly aren’t too keen on broccoli, but if you make them some ‘broccoli bites’, you might just change their mind! To make broccoli bites, you’ll need broccoli, eggs, cheese, onion, mayo, salt and pepper, plus some bread. For the full broccoli bites recipe, check out Simply Recipes.

#5: Sweet Potato Fries

Sweet potatoes contain vitamins B, C, and plenty of fiber. Sweet potatoes also contain an antioxidant called ‘beta-carotene,’ which becomes vitamin A after it’s been consumed. Vitamin A helps our kid’s bodies to produce white blood cells.  And it’s the role of white blood cells to remove pathogens and bacteria from the bloodstream. Most kids love fries, and sweet potato fries are the perfect tasty and nutritious snack!

To boost your child’s immune system, simple things like ensuring they have enough sleep and water go a long way. Stress can also negatively impact the immune system. With this in mind, provide your child with plenty of endorphin boosting activities; from toddler toys to nature walks and bike rides.  So, what are you favourite immunity boosting foods for your kids?
