#1: Visit Your Doctor

If you are planning to start a family, it is a good idea to visit your GP first for a full health check. Your doctor will be able to assess your medical history, discuss any health concerns and give advice as to how to prepare your body for pregnancy. They will also be able to offer advice on vitamin supplements to take and inform you on what vaccinations are recommended.

#2: Eat Healthily

It is important to maintain a healthy body weight if you are trying to conceive. Being overweight during pregnancy can lead to complications, such as high blood pressure or diabetes, and can increase your chances of miscarriage. Try to keep to a balanced diet and follow a healthy lifestyle in order to prepare your body for a happy and healthy pregnancy.

During pregnancy it is also advised that you seek advice from your doctor about taking folic acid. This helps to give your body what it needs during pregnancy.

#3: Exercise Often

Try to exercise regularly in preparation for trying to conceive.  Even just a short walk each day can help you to prepare your body for pregnancy and the many changes your body will experience. You can also continue this type of gentle exercise throughout your pregnancy, or try something like pregnancy Pilates.  Not only is it great for your physical well being, but it will help you to make new mum friends too.  However, it is important to talk to your doctor or midwife about what kind of exercise is suitable for you prior to starting.

#4: Quit Smoking and Alcohol

It is really important to your health and the health of your baby that you do not smoke or drink alcohol before and during pregnancy. This is because they can both reduce your chances of conceiving and harm your baby. You should also discuss any medicine you are currently taking with your doctor to confirm that it is safe during pregnancy.

Also try to limit your caffeine intake when you are planning a pregnancy. This includes tea, coffee and fizzy drinks. Too much caffeine can make it harder for you to fall pregnant and increases the chance of miscarriage.

#5: Rest and Relaxation

While you are trying to conceive, try to reduce your stress levels as much as possible. Take time to relax and look after your well being. Self care is important at any stage of life, but even more so when trying to fall pregnant.  Why not try a spa day at home or indulge in a few good books! You can also ask your doctor or midwife about techniques to reduce stress, as this may make it easier for you to become pregnant.

We hope you have founds these tips on how to prepare your body for pregnancy useful in your journey to starting a family.  It is such a joyous time in your life, but conception and pregnancy can be more complicated than some originally think or plan for.  So be proactive and prepare your body for pregnancy so that you have the best possible chance of welcoming your beautiful bundle of joy to this world as soon as possible.
