What Kind of Sparkling Wine Are You?

For anyone that knows me, or has been following me for a while, you will know that I am partial to a sparkling wine (or two!).  So I thought it would be fun to have a look at a few different sparkling wine varietals and help you decide which one best suits your taste and personality.  I have written this blog post in collaboration with Independent Wines and all of the wines mentioned are available from their online shop.

Francone Valsellera | Sparkling Rosé Brut NV

Nothing says a perfect summer wine like a sparkling rose.  This wine in particular is perfect for a special occasion or to just celebrate the end of another week.  It is a delightfully unusual bubbly and is made using the classic method – you know, the way they make Champagne. The sparkling wine is a gorgeous pale ruby colour and is both fresh and dry to drink. On the nose, it is fruity, with aromas of raspberry, wild strawberry, vanilla and toasted bread.

Lo Sparviere Brut Cuvée n.7 NV | Franciacorta DOCG

The ideal wine to start a wine and cheese pairing with your friends. This award winning Italian dry sparkling wine has also been produced using the méthode classique, but it has been aged sur lie for twice as long as non-vintage Champagne. This has allowed the wine to develop complex aromas and texture. The wine is a pale yellow colour and is crisp and simply delicious. On the nose it portrays elegant aromas of ripe peach, hints of honey, butter, toasted bread and almonds.

Txacolina 2018 | Sparkling White Wine

Like your sparkling wines a little less effervescent?  Then this is the perfect wine for you!  A ‘slightly‘ sparkling white wine from a boutique family-owned winery on the Atlantic coast of Spain.  Txaicolina Aizpurua is a delightful zesty wine and is perfect for a hot summer day or paired with fresh fish, oysters and sushi.  The wine has a sophisticated fragrance, reminiscent of green apples and citrus, with a minty note. And on the palate it is dry yet surprisingly lightweight.

Volo Di Farfalle 2019 | Moscato d’Asti DOCG

The ideal sparkling wine to entertain guests if you know they love a white wine, but are unsure of their preferences for sweet or dry.  This wine is truly delectable, which is evidence by some of the very prestigious awards it has won.

When translated, Volo Di Farfalle means “flight of the butterfly”– a seemingly fitting name for for a wine which is fresh, light and sweet.

The wine is produced in small batches to ensure it always has the most desirable flavours. On the nose you will smell aromas of mountain flowers, wild herbs and yellow apple. And the bubbles are small and persistent – adding just a touch of spritz to this fabulous wine.

Prosecco Superiore DOCG Extra Dry Millesimato 2018

Rounding out this list of fantastic sparkling wines, is the multi-award winning Prosecco from Italy.  This is a very special wine which is ideal to celebrate special occasions with loved ones.  Or perhaps treat your guests on arrival with this welcoming aperitif.

In your glass it will appear bright lemon, with very fine and persistent bubbles.  This sparkling wine has bold flavors with aromas of acacia flowers, and notes of apple, lemon and grapefruit.  On the palate it is dry, with a lightweight body that will leave you feeling refreshed.

  1. Volo Di Farfalle seems the most suitable for me and my friends. We rarely drink, only on special occasions, and this week we will celebrate the fact that we managed to see each other for the first time since the lockdown.
