10 Essential Tools For Every Homeowner

Metal Tape Measure

A metal tape measure enables you to measure windows, curtains, blinds, and even the kids. Metal tape measures won’t collapse on you and are easier to use than a laser measure whose main advantage is that it can measure large areas such as rooms.

If you carry a metal tape measure in your bag, you can measure furniture and other items for your home so you can make sure they fit.

Super Glue

No home is complete without a good super glue that can stick anything. Several different types of glue can work at different temperatures, with different materials, or are designed to work in outdoor environments. As a general rule, you should always have a good general super glue that can work with plastic, as most things around the home are made from plastic.

Spirit Level

Pictures, televisions, and curtain poles always look better when they are straight and not on the wonk. A good spirit level can tell you if something is straight which is invaluable when hanging anything.

Spirit levels can also tell you if something is vertically straight, which again is very helpful when doing DIY.

Pliers & Cutters

Pliers are an incredibly useful tool as are pincers and cutters. Pliers are particularly useful as they can pull out nails and remove staples. Pincers are good at fixing jewellery and cutters can be used to cut curtain wire and trim up cables.

Screwdrivers & Allen Keys

There can be little doubt that screwdrivers are one of the most essential tools for every homeowners. They come in all shapes and sizes and as a minimum, you need a flathead, a phillips head, and a pozidriv. Many opt for screwdrivers with interchangeable heads and this is a good idea as the better kits provide sturdy heads that can fit most screw types.

Allen keys or hex keys are essential for assembling furniture and even your push bike. Some screwdriver kits come with Allen key heads and this gives you better grip when you’re assembling yet another piece of Ikea furniture.

Together with super glue, a good screwdriver set is essential. If you want to go the extra mile, use an electric screwdriver.

Nails, Nuts, Bolts & Screws

There can be no denying that nails, nuts, bolts, and screws will be needed at some point in your life. As such, it is a good idea to carry a good assortment of all of them. There is nothing quite as frustrating as looking for the right size screw that you just can’t find or don’t have.

When you get the chance pick up these things from hardware stores, and make sure you keep them in good organisational storage.

Electric Drill

Whether cordless or mains powered ensure you have a good electric drill to hand with a good assortment of drill bits. Whether you are putting up a shelf, or curtains, or constructing a DIY project, the drill will become your best friend.

When using your drill, take a bit of time to plan exactly how you are going to use it before you unleash the beast. Using it without hesitation can lead to a DIY disaster quite easily.

Monkey Wrench

A monkey or adjustable wrench is another essential tool that can get you out of a hot spot. Being able to fit around most nuts will see you be able to loosen and tighten nuts as needed which can be the difference between a good life and a bad one.

They come in all shapes and sizes, so it might be an idea to get bigger and smaller ones and keep them somewhere accessible.

Hammers

At some time or other, you’re going to have to bang a nail in or two. A decent claw hammer has a variety of uses such as whacking nails, pulling them out and prising things apart. Hammers are essential for hanging pictures and art and for many DIY projects.

Decent Knife

Stanley knives are highly useful and thanks to their retractable blades, pretty safe. At some point, you’ll need to cut through things like cardboard or fabric, and a decent knife is essential in these instances.

So, there you have it, our list of the top 10 essential tools for every homeowner. A good set of household tools will keep your home running and you’ll be able to fix problems quickly.
