Common Childhood Injuries And How To Handle Them

Children can be clumsy when they are young and learning to find their balance. As they get older, they play without a care in the world. As a parent, you can’t help but constantly shout after them to be careful. However, their playful adventures are an important part of their development. It is impossible to keep them cooped up and sheltered from all the injuries out there.

Safety precautions have to be put in place before and after an injury. Whether you are a first-time parent or an experienced one, here are three common injuries your child may face and how to handle them.

Common Childhood Injuries And How To Handle Them

#1: Cuts and Wounds

Getting cuts and wounds occasionally is a part of being a child. Whether they are playing with their friends or helping you in the kitchen, your child can come crying with an open wound on the knee or a bleeding finger. When they do, it is important to calm them down quickly and reassure them that everything will be okay.

If you are dealing with a small cut, rinse it with running water to remove any dirt and reduce the bleeding. Afterwards, cover it with a sterile adhesive bandage and replace it whenever it gets wet. If it is an open wound, use a dry, clean cloth to apply pressure and elevate the limb above the heart. Apply the pressure until the bleeding stops or slows down. Finally, clean the wound and remove any debris with a tweezer before dressing it. For both cuts and wounds, consider taking them to the doctor if they are too deep or close to a sensitive area or won’t stop bleeding.

#2: Falls

Falls are the most common injuries you will deal with once your child begins to learn how to walk. At home, they are likely to tumble down the stairs or get hurt jumping from high places in an attempt to be a superhero. Outside on the playground or at school, they can fall off a swing, the monkey bars or a bike.

While safety gear like helmets, safety belts, and knee protectors are essential, it is crucial to be equipped with basic first aid skills to handle situations like concussions, fractures, and other complications that can result from falling. As a tip, consider checking them thoroughly for painful points and asking them how they feel. If you see any swelling or your kid complains of nausea or weakness in the affected limb, see a medical professional right away. In some accidents, the result of the fall can be a damaged or missing tooth. If this happens, take them to an emergency dentist for treatment.

#3: Bites and Stings

Bites and stings from pets and insects can happen at any time and anywhere. Ensure you don’t leave your children unattended, even if they are with your pet. Animals and children are unpredictable, and things can escalate very quickly. In their innocence, your child can roughly tease an animal or try to play with their food, and this can lead to hostile behaviors. It is important to keep them away from anthills, beehives, and unfamiliar animals. If your child is stung or bitten, identify the animal or insect first. If you suspect it is venomous, take them to a hospital.

Keeping your children safe from common childhood injuries is a full-time job, and while it is impossible to keep them under surveillance 24/7, being prepared to face these little accidents and the injuries they bring can be helpful.
