How Did Valentine’s Day Originate

Valentine’s Day, celebrated each year on February 14th, is a celebration of love and romance in many parts of the world.  Just incase you have forgotten the history lessons from school … it originated in the fifth century as a feast day to honor the early Christian martyr, Saint Valentine.  The celebration then went on to become associated with romantic love in the 14th and 15th centuries. Before growing to an occasion where couples expressed their love with flowers, greeting cards and confectionary in the 18th century.

These days, Valentine’s Day is considered a commercial holiday and a good excuse to spoil your loved one with red roses, chocolates and a meaningful greeting card.  I mean, who doesn’t love, love?  And whilst many of us may be in lockdown, there are still plenty of ways to celebrate Valentine’s Day in 2021.

Why Red Roses on Valentine’s Day?

You may wonder why red roses are so prominently associated with Valentine’s Day?  Well, the truth is that red roses represent true love. They are both the classic and romantic choice to gift your significant other.  Nothing says ‘I Love You‘ like red roses on Valentine’s Day.

How Many Red Roses?

It’s the million dollar question – how many red roses on Valentine’s Day is an appropriate amount to give?  And there are many theories behind what the number of roses signifies.  Some of the well known number assimilations include:

  • 1 Red Rose – you are the only one for me.
  • 12 Red Roses – I think of you 12 months a year.
  • 100 Red Roses – eternal love and we will be together forever.

Its easy to see that each number of roses signifies the same sentiment of true love.  However, there is no stopping you from creating your own significant number of red roses with a reasoning behind it.  So, how many would you choose?
